Sudoku Dictionary Pronunciation
Why can’t people agree on how to pronounce Sudoku?
There are many different opinions on the web on how to pronounce Sudoku. This is because few people understand Romanized Japanese spelling.
Sue-Dock-Oo is a bad Anglicized pronunciation. The Japanese pronounce it Sue-Doe-Coo with the “oo” in “su” lasting twice as long as the “oo” in “ku”, and all syllables having nearly equal emphasis. (see en.wikipedia.org)
A quick tutorial on Romanized Japanese vowels:
“a” sounds like “ah” (as in ball)
“e” sounds like “eh” (as in end)
“i” sounds like “ee” (as in sweet)
“o” sounds like “oh” (as in snow)
“u” sounds like “oo” (as in tooth).
A vowel with a line over it (or written twice) is voiced about twice as long as a regular vowel (e.g. Suudoku). Native English speakers will do better if they use equal emphasis on all syllables when pronouncing Japanese words. Think monotone!
That said, I suspect Webster’s Dictionary will ultimately settle on an Anglicized pronunciation for Sudoku, but only because of popular uninformed opinion.
Soo DOE Koo
It’s actualy two words in Japanese meaning “Unique Number”
